Police warn of phone scam

Pittsburg State University police are making the campus community aware of a phone scam in which individuals are contacted and advised to pay money or provide personal information. The caller claims to represent law enforcement, the FBI, IRS or other governmental entity and uses technology so that the Caller ID displays a legitimate number.

“It isn’t a new scam but it is becoming more sophisticated,” said Mike McCracken, director of university police. “The important thing to remember is that law enforcement and government agencies will never ask for your personal information over the phone.”

There are several variations and similar scams that may be attempted. If you receive such a call the best advice is to hang up and contact your local authorities.

Further information regarding these scams can be found on the FBI fraud website at: www.fbi.gov/scams-safety/fraud.
