Pitt State earns top-10 ranking on Best Bang for Your Buck list

Pittsburg State University delivers a big bang for the buck, according to the Washington Monthly’s annual college rankings, released this week. In the publication’s list of colleges and universities in the Midwest Region of the U.S., PSU is ranked number 10.

In announcing the list, the Washington Monthly editors explain that their method of ranking colleges and universities rejects criteria used by some other well-known organizations that they said rewarded universities “that spend the most money, exclude the most students and impress a small circle of elites...(I)f you want to know which colleges in America provide the best value for ordinary, non-wealthy students, the Washington Monthly remains the only game in town.”

Instead, the Washington Monthly measured colleges and universities in areas that included student loan default rate, graduation rates, the percentage of Pell Grant students and net price of attendance.

Lee Young, PSU associate vice president for enrollment management and student success, said the Washington Monthly rankings were a direct reflection of Pittsburg State’s core values.

“For well over a century, Pittsburg State University has been making a big difference in the lives of students, many who are the first in their families to attend college,” Young said. “Our goal has always been to provide high quality academic programs at the most affordable price possible in a caring and supportive environment. Rankings such as this recognize the value of those efforts.”
