Musical dinner a salute to doughboys of WWI

The Pittsburg State University Choirs will pay homage to the ongoing centennial observance of World War I at a musical dinner on Friday, September 18, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of the Overman Student Center. The dinner and concert, entitled “Over There,” will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Susan Marchant, director of the choirs and chair of the Department of Music, said the theme for the fall dinner is especially relevant as the choirs prepare for a tour of England and Wales in 2016.

The fall dinner and another one planned for Friday, February 19, entitled “The Fairest Isle,” help raise funds to support the tour.

Tickets for the fall dinner are $30 or $55 for both the fall and the spring events and may be purchased by calling Marchant at 620-235-4467 or email: smarchant@pittstate.edu. The deadline for purchasing tickets for the fall dinner is Friday, September 11.

The PSU campus did its part in the mobilization for World War I. The campus was home to the 130th Field Artillery (photo taken September 24, 1917,) and earned the nickname "Camp Brandenburg." Temporary wooden structures on the campus served as barracks for the soldiers, Whitesitt Hall was used as a guardhouse, the school cafeteria was the mess hall and officers' quarters were in Russ Hall.
