Concert makes regional music accessible to wider audience

There are lots of places to go to hear good local and regional bands, if you’re 21. That makes it hard for younger music fans to hear good live music, according to Dylan Thompson of Pittsburg State University’s Gorilla Radio.

To give younger music fans that option, Thompson said, the club is sponsoring a free concert featuring bands with regional roots at the Bicknell Family Center on Thursday, August 27.

“This is open to the public, including high school students,” Thompson said.

The concert opens at 6 p.m. with Benjamin Del Shreve, a rock band out of Fayetteville, Arkansas, that has played extensively in the Four-State area. In addition to Del Shreve, the group includes Jonathan Holder, Robert Geiger, Vincent Lichlighter and Rob Storms.

Following Benjamin Del Shreve, Zero 2 Panic, a jazzy rock band with Pittsburg roots, takes the stage. Zero 2 Panic is composed of Cody Johnson on guitar and vocals; Jason Kermashek on bass guitar, Lewis Hundley on saxophone and background vocals, Forest Swepston on trumpet and vocals, Chris Goddard on trombone and vocals, and Andy Bishir on percussion.

Gorilla Radio is composed of students studying broadcasting in PSU’s Department of Communication. Gorilla Radio broadcasts from 4 p.m. until midnight every Monday, Wednesday and Friday over CAPS 13, the student-run cable television station on campus.
