Students can 'plug into' new student center furniture

There are many large, easy-to-notice additions to the Overman Student Center these days. However, one that is sure to be a hit with students is not so easily visible.

Many of the new ottomans inside the student center’s three lounges feature built-in power outlets and USB slots, which can be used to charge mobile devices.

“This is a small, but much-needed addition to our student center lounge areas,” said Jeff Steinmiller, director of the Overman Student Center. “Students used to have to sit at a table near an outlet to have their computers or phones plugged in. Now they can relax in many areas throughout the lounge and have the option to have their devices charging.”

A similar addition in certain meeting rooms will benefit faculty and staff. Steinmiller said the conference tables in rooms with fixed, unmovable furniture are equipped with a “pop up box” that features a power outlet, video connectivity ports and a phone jack.

“This will eliminate having to string phone or electrical lines across the rooms in order to have things hooked up,” he said. “The box can come right up from the table, which will make it much easier to plug in computers, phones, projectors and other items that are often used in meetings.”
