PSU hosts Leadership Kansas

Pittsburg State University and the City of Pittsburg are playing host this week to the 2015 Class of Leadership Kansas (LK).

Leadership Kansas was established by former Kansas Gov. Robert Bennet nearly 40 years ago to help identify business, municipal and community leaders within the state and motivate them to become more involved in helping Kansas prosper.

“We believe Pittsburg has a lot to offer our state,” said Shawn Naccarato, director of government and community relations as well as an LK alumnus. “This is an opportunity to showcase our community and our university to leaders from throughout the state. We’re looking forward to showing exactly why we believe Pittsburg is such a great place to live and work.”

This year’s LK class consists of 40 members from nearly every corner of Kansas. Members travel to six locations throughout the state to better learn about the opportunities and challenges that Kansans face. This will mark the first year that Pittsburg has been added to the group’s regular rotation of cities.

“Previously, Pittsburg was an every-other-year rotating stop,” Naccarato said. “We've done optional stops a couple of years when we weren't an actual scheduled program stop. This (the addition of Pittsburg) is another indication of Southeast Kansas’ growing importance and Pittsburg State University’s growing influence in our state. We’re looking forward to two great days.”

LK participants will tour Pittsburg State University along with several local businesses during their stay in the city. Topics of discussion will include municipal and university planning, opportunities and challenges in southeast Kansas and polymer research.
