Internship takes student to Peru

When Andrea Hucke was searching for summer internship opportunities, she hoped to find one that would take her on an international adventure.

“I knew that the ideal situation would be to work abroad, because I've never been out of the country,” said Hucke, who is double majoring in Spanish and Communication at Pittsburg State. “I wanted to have that international experience while interning.”

Working with the Houston-based International Study Abroad organization, Hucke found that perfect opportunity in the form of an eight-week internship in Lima, Peru. The Cherryvale native is interning this summer at the online magazine Peru This Week, a publication geared toward travelers within the country.

“While I'm there, I'll be assisting in some of their writing, creating promotional materials, and maybe helping with their 10th anniversary events this summer,” she said. “Some of my tasks may not be public relations specifically, but I know what I've learned in my communication classes will be helpful.”

She’ll also get to use her Spanish education, as the magazine is targeted to Spanish and English speakers.

“That's one of the aspects that I'm most looking forward to,” she said. “It's going to be so awesome to completely be immersed in the culture and to really see what Peruvian life is like. I'll eat meals with them, see the city with them, and explore with them.”

Hucke said she feels grateful for the experience.

“Throughout this whole process, my professors in both departments have been really helpful and encouraging,” she said. “It's nice to know that they're excited for me and want to see me succeed.”

Hucke is keeping a live blog while in Peru. Follow along with her experience at https://tofindthewords.wordpress.com/2015/05/27/first-impressions.
