Concert celebrates barbershop harmony

Harmony will be the theme for the day when the Tristatesmen Barbershop Chorus performs and hosts four other groups for an a cappella concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts at Pittsburg State University.

Joining the Tristatesmen, which includes members from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, will be the Barbershop Harmony Society’s top-ranked comedy quartet, Lunch Break, out of Nashville, Tenn.

Other quartets to take the stage are Random Play and F.O.G., from Joplin, and Sho-Me Sound, from Springfield, Mo.

The Tristatesmen and the four quartets joining them are carrying on an American musical tradition that extends to the late 19th century when black quartets were common on street corners and in gathering spaces like barbershops.

Tickets for the concert are $15 and are available at the Pittsburg State University Ticket Office in the Weede Physical Education Building, 1701 S. Homer, or online at www.pittstate.edu/tickets. PSU student tickets are $10 with a valid student ID. Tickets will also be available at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, 1711 S. Homer, the evening of the concert. For ticket information, call 620-235-4796.
