Speaker seeks to empower bystanders

Filmmaker, author and speaker Mike Dilbeck will bring his mission to change typical bystander behavior to Pittsburg State University on Friday, April 10. Dilbeck’s presentation to students, at 7 p.m. in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, is free and open to the public.

Dilbeck’s program is entitled “Response Ability: The Revolution for Courageous Leadership” and is sponsored by Gorillas in Your Midst, Greek Life, Campus Life and Jungle Nights.

Dilbeck says he is on a mission to change the way individuals, organizations, companies, communities, and society as a whole, react when another human being, or group of people, are being adversely affected by inappropriate, abusive, or unhealthy behavior.

“Our society is hungry for a real conversation about what stops us -- all of us -- from intervening in critical moments of time to support, take care of, and protect someone in need,” Dilbeck said.

Those situations range from bullying, sexual harassment and abuse to violence, corruption, cheating, discrimination and hazing, he said, and involve colleagues, family members, friends and even family.

“Response Ability” is a community of ordinary people who act as catalysts for extraordinary change...in the way people treat and support each other.,” Dilbeck said. “(It’s) the kind of change that creates a world of security and acceptance; of respect, fairness and dignity for all.”
