Jazz concert traces PSU history

The Pittsburg State University Jazz Ensembles will present a musical and visual history lesson with their concert, “PSU in Retrospective,” at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. The concert is free.

In conjunction with musical works that run the gamut from the blues, Dixieland and swing to cool and fusion, the audience will see historical photos from PSU’s earliest days to today. Karl Kunkel, dean of PSU’s College of Arts and Sciences, will narrate the program.

The concert will feature well-known artists such as Lem Sheppard singing the blues, Todd Hastings on the Miles Davis classic, “My Ship,” and Russell Jones on the gospel-influenced “Turkey One.” Patrick Howle will sing Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” and Stella Hastings will sing the famous Brazilian work, “Girl from Ipanema.” James Clanton and Joanne Britz combine on the Krupa/Goodman hit, “Sing, Sing, Sing” and Stella Hastings, Madison Youngberg-King and Lisa Gerstenkorn present their version of the Andrews Sisters’ classic, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.”

“We’re really going to have some fun on this one,” said Bob Kehle, director of jazz studies and of Jazz Ensemble 1.

Jazz Ensemble 2 is under the direction of Todd Hastings.
