Gorman honored for professional contributions

R. Scott Gorman, a university professor in Pittsburg State University’s Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation (HHPR), was honored this spring with induction into the North American Society for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance (NAS). The event took place at the Society of Health and Physical Educators Society (SHAPE America) national convention & expo in Seattle, Wash.

Scott GormanEstablished in 1999, the NAS recognizes outstanding professionals from within the allied professions of health education, physical education, recreation, sport and dance in North America.

In announcing Gorman’s induction, SHAPE America cited his long and varied service to both Pittsburg State University and his profession. SHAPE America noted that Gorman has presented at more than 75 state, district, and national conventions and has nurtured many future professionals as the Central District Council of Future Professionals adviser.

Gorman’s professional activities include serving on the boards of the Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance (KAHPERD), SHAPE America Central District and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE); and on numerous state, district, and national committees.

Gorman’s numerous awards include the Central District Presidential Citation, KAHPERD Appreciation Award, PSU Outstanding Graduate Program Coordinator Award, the NASPE National Mentor of the Year Award, PSU Outstanding Faculty Award, KAHPERD Recreation Educator of the Year, Central District Mark Harvey Legacy Award, PSU COE Excellence in Teaching Award, MOAHPERD Presidential Appreciation Award, NASPE Joy of Effort Award, Kansas Governor's Council on Fitness and AHA Heartiest Five Award and the Honor Awards from KAHPERD, Central District and SHAPE America.
