Big Event may set record

The largest student volunteer force in the history of the Big Event at Pittsburg State is expected this weekend for the annual community clean-up project.

Big Event Coordinator Kristina Adams, junior, said more than 900 students are scheduled to work the Big Event, which takes place on Saturday, April 11.

“More than 860 students signed up to work, and that doesn’t include the students who are staffing the event, along with the Student Government Association,” Adams said. “That’s the largest number of volunteers we’ve ever had. In total, we should have well over 900 students working this weekend.”

The Big Event is an annual, massive community service project sponsored by Pitt State SGA. The project sends students across the city where they will work at more than 100 homes. Their duties include raking leaves, washing windows and cleaning out gutters.

“We want to do whatever we can to help the residents clean up their homes and yards,” Adams said. “Many of the people we help are unable to do that work themselves, so we take great pride in providing this service to them.”

The Big Event will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with a gathering in John Lance Arena, where students will get their assignments for the day. From there, they will fan out across the city to complete their tasks.
