Symphony presents concert for youngsters

The world of music got a lot bigger, Friday, for hundreds of elementary school students from Pittsburg, Frontenac and Arma.

The Southeast Kansas Symphony presented its annual Young People’s Concert at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, where the students learned, laughed and even got to test out some of the instruments they saw on stage.

The concert included an original chamber music composition by PSU Assistant Professor John Ross that he based on the children’s book “Zin, Zin, Zin! A Violin!” The symphony also performed a symphonic work, with narration, by Russell Peck entitled “The Thrill of the Orchestra.”

Raul Munguia, artistic director and conductor for the symphony, said the concert is designed to introduce students to a world of symphonic and classical music and to show them that it can be fun and enjoyable.

Following the concert, the children were invited to visit an Instrument Petting Zoo, staffed by Pittsburg High School students.
