International students eager to share their food, culture

Local residents can take a trip around the world, all in one night, at Pittsburg State University’s International Food and Culture Fair from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, in the lower level of Pittsburg’s Memorial Auditorium. The event is sponsored by PSU’s International Student Association.

Stephanie Gonzalez, international programming coordinator at PSU, said visitors will be able to walk from Finland to Brazil and stop off in Nigeria on the way.

“It really highlights the tremendous diversity Pittsburg State has among its international students,” Gonzalez said.

This spring, there are 548 international students enrolled at PSU and Gonzalez said they are eager to share their cultures with their new American friends.

“They really work hard preparing food samples, displays and cultural performances,” Gonzalez said.

Countries represented include Nigeria, Ivory Coast, India, Brazil, China, Finland, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Paraguay and Taiwan. In addition, PSU’s Hispanics of Today and Spanish Club will highlight the cultures of several nations and PSU Study Abroad, Enactus and International Friends will participate.

Admission to the International Food and Culture Fair is $2, with children 12 and under admitted for free. Food samples and beverages will be $1 each.
