GIT launches new packaging emphasis

The Pittsburg State Graphics and Imaging Technologies Department has launched a new emphasis that focuses on how product packages are designed and marketed.

The new packaging emphasis was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents in January and will be part of GIT’s full curriculum starting in the Fall 2015 semester.

Doug Younger, associate professor in the GIT Department, said the new emphasis will help students understand all that goes into designing graphics to be marketed in stores.

“No matter where you go or what stores you shop in, nearly everything you buy is going to be packaged in some way,” he said. “Many times, it is the package itself that leads to a consumer buying the product. If it’s attractive, it sells. If the package design does not catch your eye, that product may sit on the shelves for quite some time.”

The new emphasis is an expansion of packaging lessons previously taught through projects alone.

“We’ve had students take up packaging designs for projects, but we’ve never had a set group of courses dedicated to that side of the industry,” Younger said. “As today’s packaging design continues to become more sophisticated, it’s important that we put a full effort into that facet of design.”

Younger said the packaging emphasis could also lead to opportunities for interdisciplinary studies, particularly with the Kelce College of Business.

“When it comes to packaging, the design is just one part,” he said. “You’re also dealing with marketing, consumer behavior, branding, etc.”
