Event connects schools with teachers to be

For most students, Pittsburg State University’s Teacher Interview Day is an opportunity to make connections with school districts that may lead to a job offer weeks or even months down the road. But some lucky job hunters got offers on the spot.

More than 70 school districts from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma participated in Teacher Interview Day, Thursday, in PSU’s Student Recreation Center. The school district representatives conducted interviews with candidates throughout the day and gathered resumes and contact information. Several were prepared to make offers when the candidates with the right skills and experience came along.

Howard Smith, dean of the College of Education, even some districts that didn’t have openings participated in the event.

“This is part of the whole experience for the students,” Smith said. “(The districts) are taking their time and giving those students that chance to show who they are and what they can do. It’s great that they’re here.”

A number of the district representatives said Baby Boomer retirements were causing openings in their districts. Some, like Dodge City, were also looking for teachers to help with rapidly increasing enrollments.
