Students provide testing at YMCA Senior Adult Day

Students in Janice Jewett’s Personal Training class got to demonstrate what they’ve been learning Tuesday at the Pittsburg Family YMCA’s Senior Adult Day.

The event allowed numerous agencies and providers an opportunity to share information about their services with area senior citizens. At the PSU booth, the students tested participants for grip strength with a hand dynamometer, assessed flexibility with a sit-and-reach box and also completed a body composition analysis with a handheld bioelectrical impedance device.

“Many of the students have never been to a health fair or similar event,” Jewett said. “This is a good, real-life experience.”

Jewett said the inter-generational interaction was a positive learning experience for the students.

“It’s different from testing people their own age,” Jewett said. “The older adults are more likely to ask questions and engage in a conversation with the students.”
