Pittsburg State sets new summer work schedule for campus

Pittsburg State employees will enjoy a slightly different summer work schedule this year. The university has approved a new schedule that will result in campus closing at noon on Fridays. Employees will work additional hours throughout the week to compensate for the noon closing.

The change is a direct result of campus input collected during the strategic planning process.

“We held a number of campus forums last year and asked our employees what they wanted to see from their university,” said Jan Smith, co-chair of the Strategic Planning Task Force. “This concept was mentioned several times and we felt it deserved a closer look.”

Of course, few things are as simple as they first appear. A 14-member work group was formed to determine what the schedule would mean for campus and to provide a final recommendation to Presidents Council.

“We looked at a number of factors including what it would mean to students and visitors,” said Howard Smith, chair of the work group. “A university is a very dynamic place and our final recommendation reflects this. We think it’s a good idea, but are letting individual departments determine how best to implement the new schedule.”

The final recommendation was formally approved by Presidents Council late last year.

“This is a great example of the power of open communication and the planning process,” said Pittsburg State President Steve Scott. “It’s an opportunity to provide our employees with a more flexible schedule without sacrificing service to our students or community.”

Critical service areas such as university police and the library and will remain open on Friday afternoons. The new schedule will be reviewed following the summer to determine its effectiveness and if any changes should be made in the future.

The new summer schedule will begin May 10 and run through August 8. Campus hours during the summer will be as follows: Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
