New solo exhibit opens in Krug Gallery

Storytellers, a solo exhibition of the mixed-media art of Teresa J. Harris, will open in Pittsburg State University’s Harry Krug Gallery in Porter Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The exhibit runs through April 30. Harris will talk about her work at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, at the gallery and a reception will follow.’

Storyteller exhibitHarris received her MFA from Fort Hays State University and her BA from Missouri Western State University, where she is currently she is an associate professor of art.

Harris’s personal work is primarily autobiographical. In her art, Harris finds visual connections between past familial history and current life experiences. Her pieces often incorporate a combination of wood, paper, found objects, ink, handmade paper, and wax.

“Symbolism saturates my work,” Harris said. “I am moved and influenced by what has come before me: the symbol-laden art of the Middle Ages, the purposeful and impeccable craftsmanship of ancient handmade books and my own rich familial history. These connections to the past guide the iconography of my work. I deliberately choose to use objects over imagery, symbolism over realism, and suggestion over definition.”

This dialog between past and present has made an impression with people. Since 2004, Harris has exhibited in more than 40 national, international, and invitational art exhibitions. Her work is in select corporate collections such as McDougal, Littel & Company (Publishers) Evanston, Illinois; Saks Fifth Avenue New York; and the Jesup Group Sarasota, Fla. She has also completed commissions for groups like Provident Life Insurance Company in Birmingham, Ala., and AT&T in Kansas City, Mo.
