Vets Day ceremony moves indoors

Pittsburg State University will honor veterans with a program, “Lessons of Service,” at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the National Guard Armory gym in the Student Recreation Center. Officials made the decision to move the event indoors late Monday in response to predictions of temperatures in the low to mid 30s Tuesday morning.

Timothy Simpson, assistant basketball coach and ISS director at Pittsburg Community Middle School, will be the keynote speaker. Additionally, Pittsburg State University President Steve Scott will deliver brief remarks. The PSU ROTC Gorilla Battalion will post the colors and perform “the Fallen Soldier” ceremony and LTC Kenneth Hutchison, chair of the PSU Department of Military Science, will explain the history of Veterans Day. PSU junior music major Wyatt Smith will perform “Taps.”

Sixth graders from across Pittsburg will join with veterans and their families for the ceremony and music will be provided by the St. Mary’s Elementary School Choir. As part of the ceremony, 25 new pavers honoring veterans will be dedicated.

Parking for the ceremony will be available in the lots south of the memorial and staff in PSU’s Office of Development will run a shuttle from the lots to the Student Rec Center for those who require it.
