Art exhibit features faculty work

A new exhibit in the University Gallery at Pittsburg State University features the most recent works of nine members of the Department of Art faculty. “Assembly Required: Pittsburg State University Department of Art Faculty Exhibition” runs Nov. 18 through Jan. 23. A reception to meet the artists will take place from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21.

Art Department Chair Rhona McBain said the exhibition is intended to recognize and celebrate the faculty as professional working artists.

“This exhibit recognizes the many routes the faculty members have taken to come together as a group to inspire students toward what is often difficult to communicate – self discovery, imagination and tenacity,” McBain said. “The exhibition’s title, “Assembly Required,” reflects this thought and also stems from an artist’s need to critically realize the ideas he or she wants to express through art.”

McBain said this year’s faculty exhibition is especially meaningful because it is the last that will be hosted in the University Gallery in Porter Hall. Future exhibitions will be held in the large gallery space in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.

“The last faculty show in Porter Hall is an opportunity to celebrate PSU and community support of the arts,” McBain said. “It is something of which to be proud. We have always loved having the Faculty Exhibition in the gallery located where we teach our students and make artwork. But we are so excited about looking toward the future. We have a wonderful new gallery space coming in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, we have wonderful students and alumni that are making that space possible.”

The faculty exhibit features works in a wide range of media including painting, ceramics, mixed media and metals. Many of the pieces are on display for the first time. Faculty exhibitors include S. Portico Bowman, Emmalyn Gennis, Malcolm E. Kucharski, Janet Lewis, Josie Mai, Rhona McBain, Deann Norris, James Oliver and Marjorie Schick.
