Student broadcasters receive regional recognition

Student broadcasters from Pittsburg State University were honored seven times at the 2014 South Central Regional Broadcasting Conference in Edmond, Okla.

Students from PSU competed in a variety of audio and video production categories against students from several other states including Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico and Arkansas.

Assistant Professor Trent Kling said the showing represents the growth of the program over the last several years.

“We are starting to turn some heads at the regional level, which is a great thing for our program,” Kling said. “The fact that seven of our 12 entries were recognized in some fashion showcases our students’ commitment to excellence in their work, and they have the drive to continue to represent the Pittsburg State Department of Communication in the best way possible.”

Award winning students include the spring semester Sports Production II class for their work at the 2014 MIAA Basketball Tournament in Kansas City. Dakota Smith, a senior from St. John, Kan.; Amanda Kempton, a senior from Baxter Springs, Kan.; and Kersee Currier, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., were honored for their work on “Fireside Chats,” a 30-minute radio news program, while Rashid Fielder-Bey, a senior from Raytown, Mo., and Evyline Kangeri, a senior from Pittsburg, Kan., received accolades for their production of a 30-second radio public service announcement.

In the video categories, Maggie Vogts, a senior from Erie, Kan.; and Israel Maselera, from Tulsa, Okla., earned accolades in the “News Feature Package” segment, with Vogts picking up an additional award for her work on a public service announcement for the Colonial Fox Theatre.  Finally, Lauren Barlows, a senior from Overland Park, Kan.; Jasmine Kyle, a senior from Concordia, Kan., and Ryan Beck, a graduate student from Inola, Okla., earned honorable mention in the “Promotional Video” category for a piece made in collaboration with the Pittsburg State interior design program.
