The focus will be on health and fitness education this week when Pittsburg State University hosts the Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD) state convention.
Scott Gorman, a professor in PSU’s Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, said he expects nearly 500 health and physical education teachers and students from across the state to attend the convention, which runs Oct. 29-31.
Gorman, a past president of the state organization, said about 17 PSU faculty, graduate assistants, students and alumni will make presentations during the event.
Attendees will have a lot to choose from. There are 65 sessions on the schedule covering everything from how to implement the Presidential Youth Fitness Program to Chinese Jump Rope. Participants can learn about new games and activities designed to get students active, incorporating the latest technology into the PE classroom and even how to make physical education more “hip” for youngsters.
Gorman said the KAHPERD annual conference is a great way for health and physical education teachers to exchange ideas and learn new things that they can implement in their own classrooms. That’s never been more important, he said, noting that PE and health teachers are on the front lines of the battle against the nation’s obesity epidemic.
