Part lecture, part performance, pianist Paul Barnes’ presentation at Pittsburg State University of “Liszt and the Cross, Music as Sacrament in the B Minor Sonata,” will explore the relationship between music, theology, and the Orthodox icon. The free concert and lecture takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall.
“Liszt and the Cross” includes the singing of Gregorian chant as well as an examination of the iconography relating to Liszt. This is followed by a performance of Liszt’s greatest composition, the Sonata in B Minor.
Barnes, who serves as professor of music and co-chair of piano at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has performed throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S. He has been featured four times on APM’s “Performance Today” and on the cover of Clavier Magazine. His recent performance at Lincoln Center was featured in the New Yorker Magazine.
Additionally, Barnes also serves as head chanter at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Lincoln where his fascination with Byzantine chant led to a commissioned piano concerto, “Ancient Keys,” written by Victoria Bond based on a Greek chant.
Barnes' live recording of “Liszt and the Cross, Music as Sacrament in the B Minor Sonata,” has been released on the Liszt Digital label.
