Students shop at Career Clothes Closet

Mindful that there’s a company day coming up soon, two PSU students browsed through racks of men’s suit coats Wednesday. The price, they agreed, was right.

Nearly 800 Pittsburg State University students have gone shopping for free since the Career Clothes Closet opening in 2010, according to Mindy Cloninger, director of the Office of Career Services.

The service was established as a way to help students get the appropriate clothing for job interviews. To stock the closet, Career Services encourages members of the community to donate gently used, professional clothing. Students are allowed to select up to three items from the collection without charge.

“An important part of landing a job is looking professional for the interview,” Cloninger said. “That can be hard on a student’s budget.”

Cloninger said that as more members of the community and more students have become aware of the clothes closet, both donations and student use of the project has increased.

“The biggest need continues to be in men’s dress shirts, suits and sport coats,” Cloninger said.
