Sellout expected for Gorillas home opener

Pittsburg State University’s home opening football game on Saturday, Sept. 6, is nearly sold out, according to university officials. Demand for tickets to the game against the Riverhawks of Northeastern State University has been particularly strong among the Gorillas’ student fan base.

“When you include standing room only passes, we’ve distributed nearly 2,200 tickets to our students,” said Pittsburg State’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Jim Johnson. “We have a handful of student seats left but at this point our student section is sold out. Our students have answered the call to fill the stadium.”

In order to accommodate the larger than normal student section, university officials will have a standing room only section in the south end zone of Carnie Smith Stadium. Once officials have determined the regular student section is at capacity, students will be directed to this standing room only area.

“We want to make certain our students are able to enjoy the game in a safe and comfortable environment,” said Johnson.

Reserved and general admission seating is also now at a premium according to Johnson.

“We have approximately 400 seats left,” explained Johnson. “Our ticket booths will open at 5 p.m. for those on-site, but once we go through those tickets we will officially be sold out. It’s a testament to the passion our fans have for their Gorillas and their university.”

Pittsburg State ranked third among Division II schools in home game attendance in 2013, averaging 10,033 fans per game.
