A record number of students are enrolled at Pittsburg State University this fall. According to figures released by the Kansas Board of Regents Friday, PSU has 7,479 students enrolled for the fall semester. That’s an increase of 79, or just over 1 percent, compared to 2013.
“We are very pleased with the fall increase,” said President Steve Scott. “Today’s higher education environment is very competitive and students have many choices. The fact that a growing number of students choose Pittsburg State University is directly related to the strength of our academic programs, the quality and compassion of our faculty and staff, our continuing efforts to keep education affordable and the wonderful campus and community atmosphere that has become our trademark.”
Lee Young, associate vice president for enrollment management and student success (EMSS), said enrollment gains are the result of a team effort that involves everyone on campus.
“The EMSS division greatly appreciates the commitment, effort and time the faculty, staff and unit heads put forth in reaching out to our students and assisting us in bringing in an outstanding fall class.”
PSU officials noted that enrollment increased in almost all categories this fall. International enrollment took the biggest jump, going up 80 students from 464 in 2013 to 544 in 2014, a 17 percent increase.
Undergraduate numbers rose 34 from 6,236 in 2013 to 6,270 this year. Graduate enrollment rose 45 from 1,164 to 1,209 over the same period. The popular Gorilla Advantage and Gorilla Edge programs for students in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma rose by 77 students, about 4.5 percent, from 1,695 to 1,772.
