With 278,000 square feet and 1.2 miles of hallway, it would seem impossible for any event to completely fill the Pittsburg State Kansas Technology Center.
Until now.
The Pitt State College of Technology hosted its largest ever Company Day this week. More than 200 companies visited the KTC to meet, talk with and potentially hire Pitt State technology students.
“We never thought we’d be able to fill this place,” said Bruce Dallman, dean of the College of Technology, “but we were over full. That’s just incredible. Industry professionals recognize that this is the place to be and that our students are the perfect fit for their companies.”
The companies in attendance represented all areas of COT education areas, including engineering technology, automotive technology, graphics and imaging technologies, wood technology and construction management.
“The students who come out of the Pitt State program are outstanding,” said Roger Jenkins, a regional training delivery manager for John Deere. “We’ve hired many students from PSU, and that’s why we keep coming back every year.”
Rachel Wallace, a senior graphics communication major, said Company Day is a unique chance to meet with the companies most suited to the students’ future careers.
“It can be hard to go out and find the companies that you are most interested in and have what you’re looking for,” she said. “To have more than 200 companies in our building is great, because you can visit with them and find out just which companies have the answers you need. They’re all here on one day and in one spot.”
Monica Austin, a 2014 PSU graduate who now works as a safety coordinator at Alexis Risk Management, came back to campus for Company Day as a representative of her new employer.
“It’s interesting being on this side of the table, but I’m so thrilled to do it because I know how much this event helps students,” she said. “I got my job because of a connection I made at Company Day.
“Companies come here and want to recruit PSU students because they know the programs we have here are above and like no other.”
