The hallways in Whitesitt Hall were full of eager students from just about every corner of the globe, Monday, as new international students began a week of registration and orientation at Pittsburg State University.
Stephanie Gonzalez, programming coordinator in International Programs and Services, said the first day was all about the basics, including registration, getting a student ID card, checking into the residence halls and filling out paperwork – lots of paperwork.
Gonzalez said students were arriving from Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, China and several European countries.
Over the next several days, Gonzalez said, the students will attend a variety of sessions that will cover topics like cultural adjustment, health, safety, banking in the U.S., and transportation. The students will ride the PACT bus, go on a shopping trip and participate in ice-breaker activities.
All of the week’s activities are designed to help new international students start the school year on a positive note.
“Think how brave it is for students to arrive in a new country with a different language and culture,” Gonzalez said.
