Fraternity, president earn high honors

A Pittsburg State fraternity and its leader recently received high honors by its parent organization.

The PSU chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity received the Fred Schwengel Most Improved Chapter Award. James Saltat, a senior from Joplin, Mo., and chapter president, said the honor was one the fraternity has coveted for many years.

“Receiving this award is a great honor for us, because we’ve worked very hard for many years to achieve it,” he said. “It feels good to know the work and dedication we’ve put in has led to recognition by our national organization.”

For his leadership in guiding Phi Sigma Kappa to nationally-recognized status, Saltat received a prestigious honor of his own: the Order of the Diamond Circle, the highest honor an undergraduate can receive from the fraternity.

Saltat became just the fourth PSU student to earn the award, joining Shawn Naccarato, Matt Crotts and, most recently, Jeremy Donahue.

“I’m humbled to be on the list with those great members of Phi Sigma Kappa,” Saltat said. “I didn’t get into this for individual honors, but I’m incredibly proud to receive this on behalf of our chapter at Pittsburg State.”

Starting Aug. 25, Phi Sigma Kappa will begin its annual Trampoline-a-Thon philanthropy event on The Oval. Proceeds from this year’s event will be used to help send a local Special Olympics athlete to the World Games in Los Angeles in 2015.
