There’s a new generation of Gorillas on their way to Pitt State and the university is working this summer to make sure they’re excited and ready for the adventure ahead. That goes for their families, too!
Melinda Roelfs, director of the Office of Admission, said PSU will host nine Pitt C.A.R.E.S. (Campus Advisement, Registration and Enrollment Services) sessions during the month of June to get the new students enrolled and answer both their questions and those that their parents might have. About 1,000 participants are expected.
“Students in the CARES sessions meet their academic advisers, get enrolled, have their Photo ID made, meet other new freshmen and learn about the wide variety of services available to them as students at Pittsburg State,” Roelfs said. “Taking care of these details in the summer means that when the semester begins, they can focus on getting off to a great start.”
Roelfs said the CARES sessions also help alleviate anxiety for students and parents.
“There are small-group activities that help students relax and meet other incoming freshmen as well as current PSU students,” Roelfs said. “At the same time that the incoming freshmen are in their small groups, the parents are in sessions designed specifically for them.”
The parent sessions address issues such as campus safety, financial aid, and study abroad.
All 2014 high school graduates planning to attend PSU in the fall are required to attend a Pitt CARES session. The first seven sessions, on June 2, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, and 16 are already full. Limited space remains available for the June 18 and 20 sessions.
