PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Pittsburg State sophomore safety Deron Washington has been selected to
serve as the MIAA representative to the NCAA Division II National
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
As a member of national SAAC, Washington will have the opportunity
to represent Pittsburg State and MIAA student-athletes on NCAA
committees. He will have a voice in the NCAA Division II
legislative and governance process, as well as promoting a positive
image of DII student-athletes.
Washington just returned from his first meeting with the group in
which they discussed new and continued SAAC representation on
various committees, community engagement, recognition of mentors,
the partnership with Make-A-Wish and several things regarding
student-athlete well being.
Washington will serve a three-year team with National SAAC. The
group is made up of one student-athlete representative from each
Division II conference, one representative for independent schools
and two at large representative. Two members of the NCAA Management
Council and one Member of the President's Council also serve as
non-voting members. The representatives span all sports.
"I am honored that my coaches, administrators, peers and the MIAA
had trust in confidence in me to put me in this position,"
Washington said. "It is a great opportunity for me to represent our
conference and move the student-athlete voice further in the
direction we would like to go. This weekend was a new experience
for me to be able to hear how different conferences and sports do
things at their own schools. I got to hear from a lacrosse player
and a swimmer. I don't have experience with those sports. I like
the diversity of voices in the group."
Washington will have several conference calls with the group a
year, as well as two meetings and the NCAA Convention each year
that he will attend. He could also have the opportunity to speak at
other conventions and workshops with student-athletes and
administrators from across the country.
