Students make an impression at Teacher Interview Day

Amanda Krause, a senior education major from Belton, Mo., confessed to some nerves before her first session at Teacher Interview Day on Thursday, March 13, but she said those quickly passed as the interviews went on.

“I was pretty nervous before the first interview,” Krause said. “But each one after that was better.”

Krause said the school district officials were friendly and put her at ease quickly.

She was one of more than 100 PSU students who participated in this year’s event, which was moved earlier in the year to better position the Pitt State candidates in the spring hiring process.

About 70 school districts participated in Teacher Interview Day, an increase over last year. Dean of the College of Education Howard Smith said opportunities for new graduates are improving, especially in high-need areas and especially for students who are able and willing to move.

School districts that hire PSU grads won’t regret their decision, according to Gloria Flynn, assistant professor in Teaching and Leadership.

“Our students are very well prepared,” Flynn said. “We have outstanding faculty and dedicated cooperating teachers who have worked hard to make sure these graduates are ready for the classroom.”
