Speaker addresses ethics, communication and diversity

Brenda Allen, associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion at the University of Colorado at Denver, will speak on ethics, communication and concerns about diversity, at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 24, in the Governor’s Room of Pittsburg State University’s Overman Student Center. Allen’s presentation is free and open to the public.
In her
presentation, Allen will also focus on the importance of diversity
in this era of moral complexity both in society and in higher
education.
Allen’s research and teaching areas include organizational communication, diversity, group communication, and critical pedagogy. She is the author of “Difference Matters: Communicating Social Identity,” and numerous other publications.
“Dr. Allen's research and awareness of diversity issues is intellectually sophisticated yet accessible to all,” said Joey Pogue, assistant professor in PSU’s Department of Communication.
In addition to her public presentation Monday evening, Allen will lead two faculty and staff workshops, one at 9:30 a.m. and a second at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, March 25, in the Governor’s Room.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Pittsburg State’s campus and the Pittsburg community to host a woman of diversity and leadership,” said Laura Washburn, a professor in the Department of English and director of Women’s Studies. “Dr. Allen has a lot to offer and we could not be more excited for her presentation.”
Allen’s visit is sponsored by PSU’s Women’s Studies Program along with the Department of Communication, Office of Student Diversity, Tilford Group, Academic Affairs, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology.
At the end of Allen’s Monday evening presentation, there will be a question-and-answer session, followed by a reception in the Heritage Room.
