SEK Symphony features virtuosi from Brazil

The Southeast Kansas Symphony has titled its next concert “'Vistuosi from the South” in honor of two Brazilian musicians who will join them in the performance. The concert is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, in Pittsburg’s Memorial Auditorium.

Raul Munguia, artistic director for the symphony and a member of the faculty in Pittsburg State University’s Department of Music, said double bassist Marcos Machado and pianist Ney Fialkow will spend several days teaching master classes to PSU double bass and piano students in conjunction with their appearance with the symphony.

A native of Brazil, Machado maintains an international career as a concert artist, teacher and chamber musician. He is the only South American to have earned both teaching and performance diplomas from the L'Institut International de Contrebasse de Paris.

Machado teaches classical double bass, chamber music and jazz studies at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). He is the director of the Southern Miss Bass Symposium and is also the principal bass of the Meridian Symphony. In Brazil, he is the founder and pedagogic director of the Festival Internacional Música no Pampa (FIMP).

Fialkow is an associate professor of music at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and also maintains a busy career as a soloist and collaborative pianist. Fialkow holds a master’s degree in music from the New England Conservatory and a doctor of musical arts degree from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University.

Fialkow has multiple CDs to his credit, including "Sonatas Brasileiras" (Brazilian Sonatas), which he recorded live with acclaimed violinist Carmelo de los Santos. That CD received the Açoriano Prize for best classical CD in 2009.

Thursday’s concert will include Fanfare from “La Péri,” by Paul Dukas. Also on the program is Hungarian Dance No. 5 in G Minor by Johannes Brahms and Symphony no 8 in B minor, "The Unfinished," by Franz Schubert.

Pianist Fialkow will be featured on Concertino for Piano and Orchestra by M. Camargo Guarnieri. Machado will be featured on Nine Variations on Paganini, for Double Bass and Orchestra.

Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults and $5 for students ages 13-18. PSU students (with ID) are admitted free. Children 12 and under are free.
