PSU Choirs present spring concert

The Choirs of Pittsburg State University will present their annual spring concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall. The University Choir, PSU Chorale, and Jazz Choir will be under the direction of Susan Marchant. 

The concert is free and open to the public.

This concert will feature guest oboist, Ann Knipschild, from Auburn University, who will serve as soloist in several works on the program. Included in these works will be premieres of two new choral works written specifically for performance on the choir’s upcoming tour of Scotland. The first of those pieces, “She’s like the swallow,” is an arrangement of the well-known Canadian folksong, by Kathryn Parke. The second, “Columba Spes Scotorum” (Columba, Hope of the Scots), is a work based upon a chant found in the 14th-century “Inchcolm Antiphoner.” This chant is an homage to St. Columba, the Irish monk who established an abbey on the Isle of Iona, and from there worked tirelessly to bring Christianity to the Scots. This new work, composed by Susan Marchant, is scored for choir, oboe, and hand chimes. Members of the Chorale will have an opportunity to perform this music in the modern Abbey Chapel on the Isle of Iona on March 17.

Vocal soloists on this concert will include Katie Knoles, Daniel McDill, Aaron Hayse, and Jordan Riggs. Ian Classe, Shu Zhang, and Junle Li will serve as piano accompanists.
