Pittsburg State University Selected as Host Site for 2014 Kansas Class 5A State Title Game

The Kansas State High School Activities Association has selected Carnie Smith Stadium as the host site for the 2014 Kansas Class 5A state championship game for football.
The game will be played Saturday, Nov. 29.
This will mark the fourth time Carnie Smith Stadium has been tabbed to play host to a Kansas state title contest and the second time the 5A crown will be decided in Pittsburg.
CSS hosted the 5A title game in 2001 as well as the Class 4A state championship in 2002 and again in 2004.
“Any time we have the opportunity to attract first-class events like a Kansas state championship game or the Kansas Shrine Bowl to campus we are certainly excited to do so,” PSU director of intercollegiate athletics Jim Johnson said. “Pittsburg is a Class 5A community so there certainly will be a great deal of interest locally in 5A’s ultimate game.”
This won’t be the only major event Pittsburg State will host in 2014. In addition to the 5A state championship game, the university will also be home to the Kansas SAE Baja competition in May and the Kansas Shrine Bowl in July.
“These types of events raise the profile of our university and our community,” said Pittsburg State University President Steve Scott. “They’re a reflection of the quality of our facilities and the appeal of our region. We’re looking forward to welcoming the participants and their fans to campus.”
Pittsburg State University and the Crawford County Convention and Visitors Bureau will share host responsibilities for the game.
“We’re excited to get a state championship back to Pittsburg,” CCCVB executive director B.J. Harris said. “We definitely feel that Pittsburg has a great reputation for hosting championship events and we’re excited to showcase our facilities, hospitality and love for football this November. Obviously, it’s great to get people to town anytime of the year, but getting folks to town during the biggest holiday shopping weekend of the year will certainly be a boost to our economy.”
