Interview Day pairs school districts, new teachers

About 70 school districts from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma will meet Pittsburg State University’s newest crop of graduating teachers on Thursday, March 13.

PSU’s Teacher Interview Day, which will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in John Lance Arena, allows school districts to meet and interview multiple candidates for positions they need to fill for the upcoming school year.

Interviews are scheduled in 25-minute blocks and students gather in a roped-off waiting area as they wait their turn to interview with the districts they have selected. A bell rings at the end of each block, signaling that it is time for the students to move to their next interview.

David Hogard, assistant director for employer relations in PSU’s Office of Career Services, said the number of districts interviewing is up slightly over last year and significantly from the worst days of the Great Recession when schools slashed budgets and anxious baby boomer teachers delayed retirement.

Now, he said, opportunities for teachers seem to be improving.
