Opera celebrates love for Valentines Day

The Pittsburg State University Opera Theatre will celebrate Valentines Day with a double bill of operatic love, according to director Patrick Howle.

The Opera Theatre will present two of Puccini’s one-act operas, “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi,” on Friday, Feb. 14, and again on Sunday, Feb. 16. The Friday performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday performance at 3 p.m. Both will be in Memorial Auditorium.

The Southeast Kansas Symphony, under the direction of Raul Mungia, will accompany the operas.

“Suor Angelica” tells the story of a young woman's undying and unconditional love for her son, who she was forced to abandon in infancy. “Gianni Schicchi” is Puccini's only comedic opera and features one of his most famous arias, the beautiful "O mio babbino caro."  The plot revolves around a father's love for his daughter and his love for money!

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students under 17 and seniors over 65 and $5 for groups of 10 or more. PSU students and faculty are admitted free with valid ID.   Tickets are available at the PSU Ticket Office in the Weede PE Building, 620-235-4796, www.pittstate.edu/tickets.
