Employers, students pack the room for Career Day

Mindy Cloninger called it “cozy.”

Things were definitely tight Thursday as more than 90 companies and agencies packed the Overman Student Center for Spring Career Day. Cloninger, director of the Office of Career Services, said it was the largest turnout in the event’s history.

Company representatives weren’t complaining, however. They seemed more focused on getting students interested in the full-time jobs and internships they need to fill.

Holly Haynes, representing Spangler Graphics in Kansas City said she had met several students who seemed like they might be a good fit for her company. That’s a good thing, as Spangler is looking for 75 people to tackle a long list of summer projects at the company.

Julia Sammur, a senior marketing major from Olathe, Kan., said she was trying to gauge the opportunities available in an effort to decide whether she will go to work or go on to graduate school after commencement in May.

“I came to the Fall Career Day, too,” Sammur said. “I’ve spoken to several companies. There is a lot of interest in business grads.”

Cloninger said there seemed to be a lot of energy at this spring’s Career Day.

“There are definitely some good job opportunities for students among the companies and agencies here today,” she said.
