Seventh fraternity forming on campus

Pittsburg State University is in the early stages of welcoming to campus its seventh fraternity.

A representative from the national Sigma Alpha Epsilon organization is on campus for the next two weeks to recruit members for what he hopes will soon be a Pittsburg State chapter.

“We have received permission from the university to form a Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at Pittsburg State,” said Thomas Brigman. “What I’m doing now is looking for gentlemen who want to join.”

Once he receives commitment from approximately 15 students, the fraternity will form a colony. The next step will be to receive their charter as an official chapter.

“This is very exciting,” said Jose Contreras, president of Pitt State’s Interfraternity Council. “As the general student population at Pitt State continues to grow, so too should the Greek presence. It’s always great to see this kind of activity and energy in Greek life.”

According to its website, the mission of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is to promote the “highest standards of friendship, scholarship and service” for its members. Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded on March 9, 1856, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
