One of the first things Pittsburg State University students should do as the spring semester begins is apply for scholarships for next fall and spring. PSU officials say students have only a few weeks left to apply for scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year.
The deadline to apply for general university scholarships is Feb. 1, and students must apply by logging into the GUS system on the Pitt State website. Pitt State awarded more than $3 million in scholarships last year and is expected to award a similar amount in the year ahead.
“Applying for scholarships is a simple process that takes place while students are completing their admission and enrollment procedures,” said Tammy Higgins, director of the Office of Student Financial Assistance. “There are a lot of scholarship dollars available, and we encourage all of our students to apply.”
Students who are awarded a scholarship will be notified by letter in mid-March.
According to Higgins, most scholarships are awarded on a merit basis. However, some do include financial need as a requirement.
“There are a variety of scholarships available to students,” Higgins said. "The main focus right now is that students must make themselves eligible for any of them by applying by Feb. 1. Being aware of and meeting that deadline is very important.”
