Steve Erwin, Pittsburg State University associate vice president for campus life and auxiliary services, has announced the appointment of Joseph F. Firman as the director of PSU’s Center for the Arts. Firman will begin work on February 3rd.

Currently under construction, the Center for the Arts is scheduled to be completed later this year.

Firman is currently the special projects coordinator at Dakota State University. Previously, he served as director of operations for the Sioux Falls, S.D., Convention Center and before that, as the facility manager for the Performing Arts Center at South Dakota State University.

While serving in the Air Force, Firman worked as a military broadcaster producing radio and television programing in Germany, Bosnia and Iceland.

Firman earned a bachelor of science degree in fine arts administration from Dakota State University in Madison, S.D., in 1997. He earned a master’s degree in human relations from the University of Oklahoma in 2002.

As director of the Center for the Arts, Firman will be responsible for the overall management of the facility, including supervision of staff, program development, scheduling, marketing the facility and its programs and constituent relations.

“The new Center for the Arts is going to be great and I am honored to be able to work with the students, faculty, staff, and community in bringing this facility online for all to enjoy,” Firman said. “I remember the amazement I had the first time I went to a performance and I’m looking forward to bringing that same sense of amazement to all our guests and performers when they come to their first performance here.

“My wife, Amy, and I, as well as our four children, Sam (10), Josh (9), Ben (7), and Anna (5) are looking forward to joining the Pittsburg community.”
