Phones, tablets to be among top tech gifts

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday just days away, the holiday shopping season is about to heat up. As always, gadgets and gizmos are expected to be among the most sought-after items.

“We’ll see high demand for everything from cell phones to gaming consoles to wearable technology,” said Angela Neria, Pittsburg State’s chief information officer. “The tech world is always especially popular during the holidays.”

Also popular during and after the holidays is the wireless network at Pitt State, which continues to see an increase in the number of users. During the past three semesters, Neria said, there has been a 63 percent increase in the number of mobile devices using the campus network.

“Cell phones and tablet computers continue to rise in popularity and affordability,” Neria said. “So, more and more students have them and bring them to campus.”

To keep up with the increasing demand, the university continues to add more wireless access points across campus.

“We’re always striving to improve our network to accommodate for the added demand,” Neria said. “We focused heavily this year on our dorms, but we also paid close attention to the needs on all parts of campus.”

The newest Apple iPhones and iPads are expected to be among the most popular gadgets this year. Gaming consoles such as Xbox One and Playstation 4 will also be popular.

“And one of the newest trends these days is the wearable technology, such as the ‘chunky’ headphones and smart watches,” Neria said. “They are really growing in popularity, and I expect many people to go after them this holiday season.”

While most cell phones come equipped with quality cameras, Neria expects shoppers to still flock to the high-end point-and-click cameras.

“Cameras on phones do a good job, but actual cameras are still what you need for those really high-resolution images,” she said.

And when you don’t know what to get?

“It’s hard to go wrong with a nice gift card,” Neria said.
