Enso String Quartet to perform at PSU

The Grammy-nominated Enso String Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in Pittsburg State University’s McCray Hall. The performance is part of the PSU Department of Music Solo and Chamber Music Series.

In addition to the evening concert, members of the quartet will present a master class for PSU students and other interested persons 10:30 a.m. that day in the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall.

Founded at Yale University in 1999, the Enso String Quartet has, in a decade and a half, risen to the front rank of string ensembles in the U.S. The quartet has won numerous awards, including top prizes at the Concert Artists Guild competition and the Banff International String Quartet competition.

The Enso String Quartet regularly performs the classics of the string quartet literature, but also champions lesser-known works that deserve to be heard, along with much contemporary music, including works the Enso has commissioned. The ensemble also performs many of its own transcriptions, including arrangements of 16th Century Renaissance music.

For their Pittsburg program, the quartet will note the upcoming 150th anniversary of the birthday of Richard Strauss with a performance of his String Quartet in A Major, Op. 2. The quartet will perform Giacomo Puccini’s “Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums)” for string quartet and three Munuets in A Major. They will conclude with String Quartet in E Minor by Giuseppe Verdi.

In addition to their performances at concert halls around the world, the Enso String Quartet and its individual members are frequent instructors. The ensemble gives master classes for the next generation of professional musicians, but also works with enthusiastic amateurs, young and old, and with the autistic, in conjunction with the United Kingdom-based organization Music for Autism.

The ensemble, based in New York, has made a number of critically acclaimed recordings for the Naxos label.

Tickets for the Pittsburg concert are $12 for the general public and $8 for persons 65 and older or under 18. Full-time PSU students are entitled to a free ticket. Tickets are available in advance through the University Ticket Office in the Weede PE Building (620-235-4796, www.pittstate.edu/tickets) or at the door prior to the performance.

The Solo and Chamber Music Series is supported by major funding from the PSU Student Government Association.
