Symphony plans fun-filled Halloween concert

The Southeast Kansas Symphony will get into the Halloween spirit for a fun and informal free concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27. The symphony will present “Hauntcert on Pine Street,” which is a reference both to the season and to Memorial Auditorium’s location at 4th and Pine streets.

Director Raúl Munguía, professor of violin and viola at Pittsburg State University, said the free Halloween-themed concert is a new tradition for the symphony and he hopes families make it a part of their annual Halloween celebrations.

“The concert is an informal one addressed to children and their parents where they will have the opportunity to see all members of the orchestra and conductors in costumes,” Munguía said.

Several PSU Music Department faculty will collaborate on fun pieces and skits, Munguía said, and there will be a celebrity guest conductor, an audience member conductor, a costume contest, face painting, Halloween treats, and some other surprises.

Munguía said the concert is also an educational opportunity for PSU students.

“For me it is a great opportunity to have the conducting students be an essential part of the concert preparation, since they have to be able to make important decisions such as selecting their own repertoire, planning rehearsals, and bringing each piece alive,” Munguía said.

Graduate students Ernesto Estigarribia, Meiling King, and senior Eitel Krohn are the student conductors co-conducting the event.
