Solo & Chamber Series opens with oboe, piano concert

Pittsburg State University’s 2013-2014 Solo & Chamber Music Series opens on Friday, Sept. 20, with a performance by Scott Bell, oboist, and pianist/organist Larry Allen. The two will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall.

Bell joined the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1992. Prior to that, he was a member of the Hartford Symphony, the New Orleans Symphony and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Veracruz (México). He has also made appearances with the Atlanta, Milwaukee and Savannah symphonies.

A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, Bell was a concerto competition winner both at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Calif. He is on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, and also teaches privately.

Allen is director of music and organist at Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh. He is the dean of the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Guild of Organists and secretary for the executive board of the Pittsburgh Camerata. He has performed in the U.S. and Europe, and has been a touring organist with the Empire Brass Quintet.

Solo and Chamber Music Series tickets are available at the PSU Ticket Office in the Weede PE Building and may be purchased in person or by phone at 620-235-4796. Individual performance tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for persons over 65 or under 18. Complete season tickets and “Any Four” package tickets are available at a discount.
