Pittsburg State Family Day Game Sold-Out

Pittsburg State University’s Carnie Smith Stadium will be filled to capacity on Saturday when the Gorillas host the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University.

Pittsburg State officials today declared the game a sell-out with more than 10,500 fans expected to attend.

“We have an incredible fan base,” said Jim Johnson, PSU director of intercollegiate athletics. “Online sales picked up right after the end of the home opener and people have been lining up to get their tickets in person throughout the week. It’s going to be a great atmosphere on Saturday.”

As in the past, the sell-out declaration means that no tickets will be sold at the stadium on Saturday, although the Will Call window will remain open for those who purchased tickets in advance and for player’s families.

Sell-outs are nothing new for the Gorillas who saw four sell-outs during the 2012 season.

“It’s pretty amazing when you consider that Carnie Smith Stadium only has about 8,000 seats,” said Johnson. “We’ve been able to increase that amount by adding additional bleachers in the end zones and designating Standing Room Only areas.”

Saturday’s game is “Family Day” at Pittsburg State University and will feature activities throughout the day.

“We have a large number of families who are returning to campus to take part in our family events and enjoy a game with their children,” said Johnna Norton, director of alumni and constituent relations. “It’s always a fun time, but knowing the game will be filled with the best fans in the nation will make it even better.”

The Pittsburg State football team convincingly led the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and ranked fifth among all NCAA Division II schools in home game attendance during the 2012 season.

The Gorillas averaged 10,055 fans in five home games at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium last fall, with sell-out crowds in four of the five contests. Pitt State's average attendance represented an amazing 126 percent of capacity in the 7,950-seat venue.
