KTC to host Company Day Wednesday

More than 145 technology-related companies will get a close look at prospective employees this week at the Pittsburg State College of Technology’s annual Company Day at the Kansas Technology Center. Company Day, one of the premier industry-student networking events of year, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the KTC.

Bruce Dallman, dean of the College of Technology, said this year's event is shaping up to be the largest in its history. The number of companies is up by about 20 from last year's count.

"When the economic downturn hit, our numbers for Company Day dropped a bit," Dallman said. "However, those numbers are again growing, and this year will be the largest Company Day since we started this more than 10 years ago.

"That's encouraging," he said. "because that shows companies are looking to hire and add to their workforce. That also means more and more job opportunities for our students are becoming available, which is the ultimate benefit."

Company Day began initially as a showcase for construction companies. It soon expanded to include engineering technology, automotive and diesel/heavy equipment, graphics and imaging technologies, electrical technology and wood technology.

“This is one of the most exciting days of the year for us in the College of Technology,” Dallman said. “Not only do our students get a chance to meet and talk to a large number of potential employers, but industry professionals get to come into the KTC and see just how much we have to offer here.”

Dallman said Company Day opens students’ eyes to the various career opportunities in a technology-related field.

“An event like this is ideal for those students who haven’t decided on a major or career path,” he said. “On this day, industry professionals come to them and show them just what is out there. A lot of our graduates decided on their future course thanks in part to people they met at Company Day. That’s why this event is so important and why we truly enjoy hosting it every year.”
