Used beds help social service agencies

Some children in Kansas and Oklahoma are sleeping better, thanks to a gift from Pittsburg State University. On Thursday, the university donated about 60 surplus beds from its renovation of Dellinger Residence Hall to social service agencies in Kansas and Oklahoma that will distribute them to families they serve.

PSU officials said that as part of the renovation, all of the rooms in the residence hall will have new, modular beds. That meant the university had to store about 170 of the used beds.

PSU contacted area agencies about the beds and the response was immediate and enthusiastic.

“I know of one family with four boys and room for only three beds,” said Peyton Westmoreland, a school-based social worker for the Department of Human Services in Ottawa County, Okla. “They were real excited to find out they could get bunk beds.”

PSU student athletes volunteered to help load the beds for the social service agency representatives.

The agencies receiving beds Thursday included The Farm, Inc. (TFI); Kansas Family Preservation Services; DCCCA, a children’s placement agency; and Oklahoma Children’s Services.
